Next Meeting May 21

by Admin on May 12, 2012

Please join us at the Mountain Writers meeting on Monday May 21st (We moved the meeting from its originally scheduled date because of the conflict with Memorial Day.), at 6:30 p.m. at Don’s place, 28146 North Bay Road, Lake Arrowhead. Phone (909) 744-8561.

This month our speaker is Rick Ray. We are looking forward to an informative and enjoyable evening.

Rick Ray

Rick  is a retired literary agent with a lifetime of experience both professional and personal. After graduating from UCLA, he was hired by MCA, the largest and most powerful agency in the business headed by the famous Lew Wasserman.  Rick was in charge of the Television Literary Division until an anti-trust action put MCA out of business. Turning lemons into lemonade, Rick and a partner formed what became the number one literary agency on the West Coast which lasted twenty-one years.  They then merged the company with two others to form Triad Artists. He was Senior Partner and head of the Literary Division until retirement.  For his contributions, Rick has been personally thanked twice on the Academy Awards.

On a personal note, Rick married George Burns’ niece and spent many wonderful hours listening to the comedy crowd of the likes of Danny Thomas, Edgar Bergen, Jack Benny, and others.  He has a son and daughter, both highly successful screenplay writers.  Billy Ray also directs and is currently working on two exciting projects. Perhaps we can ask Rick to talk about.  Rick has traveled  to 130 countries and counting, most in his own plane which he piloted. He is a wonderful storyteller and will be sure to entertain and as well as inform our writers.

April 30th Meeting Minutes

by Admin on May 4, 2012

The April 30th meeting featured a poetry reading by Seretta Martin.

Guest Speaker

Seretta Martin, our guest speaker began with some of her activities and experiences in bringing poetry to adults and children. Among her other credentials, she is currently editor for the San Diego Poetry Annual, a member of the editorial staff of Poetry International, and teacher and a student in San Diego State University’s MFA program. Seretta is a major supporter of Boarder Voices, a project aimed at helping children explore the universe through poetry. A poetry fair at Balboa Park in San Diego has been scheduled for May 12.

Ms. Martin also spoke about some of her more unusual activities. She taught poetry to a group of expelled eighth graders and managed to make a difference in a number of lives. She also like to experiment with different forms, such as ekphrastic poetry, where a poem is paired with a visual work of art, and haibun, a form that combines prose and haiku.

Following her introduction, Seretta shared several poems from her upcoming book. She spoke about the inspiration for several poems as well as discussing how to organize a book of poetry. Her work included prose poems, lyrical poetry, and haibun.

There was also some discussion about the differences between prose and poetry, how a poet decides when a poem is completed,  and sources of inspiration.

Poetry Prompt

Seretta provided a poem prompt for members who want to further their own skills and understanding.

The poem is to write a “memory poem.”

Write a poem from a memory of yours and send it to her with a notation from Mountain Writers Lake Arrowhead. Her email is:   wordsoup@juno.com

Some suggestions to get you started:

What memory do you treasure or not treasure?
People who helped or hurt you.
A place you saw for the last time.
Who is no longer in your life.
Triumphs or failures.
Part of your life lost.
Friend or mentor or pet.
Piece of music.

You may compose any way you like.  Spurts, one word lines, narrative or lyrical. Pay attention to your opening line and the image you are presenting.

Good luck!  And please share your poem with us at next meeting.
